In the Magic town of Lalibela in northern Ethiopia, that is famous for its monolithic rock-cut churches, I met Sabaa and her daughter who makes and sells these beautiful decorative baskets from her home. Basket weaving is a long tradition in Ethiopia, usually done by women. There are no patterns to follow and the designs, which are usually religious, are passed down from generation to generation. The shapes, sizes, patterns and complexity of the baskets vary greatly, reflecting the diverse culture and history of Ethiopia and its people.
These attractive baskets can be used to store things or even hung on the wall. This would make a great centre piece to a dining table filled with brightly coloured fruit.
